The spring in Birstonas was first mentioned in the chronicles of the Teutonic Order in 1382 as a "farmstead by the salt water". In the mid-19th century, a spa was established in the town of Birstonas after patients with various ailments were successfully treated by drinking the mineral water. People came to the spa and word spread about the healing powers of the water. In 1924, carbon dioxide was added to the mineral water and it was bottled and sold for mass consumption.
According to legend, Grand Duke Vytautas the Great, along with his soldiers, occasionally drank from the spring to recover from the rigors of battle. Their quick recovery made the spring a favorite place for Vytautas and his men. He ordered that the water be made available to his men in all his castles. Therefore, the name of Grand Duke Vytautas lives on and a brand in his name was introduced.
Today, Vytautas is Lithuania's best known and most popular mineral water brand and a member of the Water Sommelier Union.
